On Saturday 8th August 2009, the Demons met at our 'home' pitch of St. Peregrines GAA in Blanchardstown. The game wasnt going to be starting off well was the initial thought as only 4 players turned up at the nominated meeting time and one of those was Neil who travelled down from Belfast. After frantic texting and phone calls, eventually, the Demons managed to get our full compliment of 17 for the day, and actually had a bench (albeit a small - but effective one).
The Demons were without club capain Johnny 'Toasty' Enright & coach Bouncer but the strength in depth on the day showed through and most notably was the return of the Durkan dastardly trio - veteran Ciaran 'The original Durk', younger brother Sean and older bro Mick - who contributed a brace of majors on his maiden run out for the Dees.
As always, the Saints were ready to do battle and this showed from the first ball up with the Saints earning the first major score of the day. They rallied the Demons back line for most of the first period and were duely rewarded with 4 goals, but the Demons held firm with 3 of their own.
Demons 3.2(20) Saints 4.3(27)
The second quarter started off better for the Dees and this time, the ball spent most of the period in and around the Dees forward line. Some fine goals from Mick and Big Joe ensured the half ended with the sides split by a very thin slice.
Demons 6.4(40) Saints 5.5(35)
Captain of the day Walshy had some harsh words to dish out during the break as the umpire (Dee) was getting too much verbal abuse. So much so that Kitsy was given 10 mins to settle down on the side line and the game also had to be stopped for a few mins so that Dee could have a chat with the captains to cut it out. But this was adhered to and the rest of the game was played with the spirit the league is renowned for.
The third quarter proved to be the fabled 'championship' quarter for the Demons. After some positional changes and fresh legs interchanging, the Demons pushed hard to get the upper hand and were rewarded on the score board. A fine goal from Kitsy and a goal of the day from Shan were the highlight of the quarter. Durk, Denser and Neil working hard across the half back line to ensure the supply to the Saints forwards dried up and meant that Walshy was able to move further up the field and assist in getting the ball to the forwards quickly. Some last ditch tackling also proving the turning point. A fantastic 3 on 1 was thwarted by an excellent tackle by Denser and a fantastic double tackle by Durk just at the whistle meant the saints were kept to a single in that quarter.
Demons 11.5(71) Saints 6.6(42)
The final quarter proved more of the same from the Demons. The elusive 1 percenters were on display all over the field; shepherds, voice, tackles, off the ball running and some more straight kicking ended in the result the Demons were striving for. The highlight of the match was the excellent individial goal from young Paddy. Upon receiving the ball near the centre of the pitch, he took off on a run, a couple of bounces and a bullet of a kick through the big posts were just desserts for his efforts on the day.
Demons 14.6(90) Saints 7.10(52)
This victory ensured that the Dees end the season on top of the ladder, the minor premiership flag and a spot in the grand final. Every player stepped upto the plate and put his body on the line for his fellow Demons. A few heads turned when Walshy and stand in coach Kruger announced the Demons of the day. As it unfortunatley cannot be given to 17 players, it was Kitsy that was given the number 1 vote - despite his journey to the 'sin bin'. His performance though was his usual tough tackling and ever ready like running. He was closely run by Neil, Big Joe and Shan (who indicentaly was the umpires' choice)
To celebrate the 10th anniversary of the club, the Demons held a BBQ at the club house. It was then onto old 'sponsors' the woolshed for a few drinks, to ensure everyone knew how great we all played and how much better we were in our retelling of the match than on the pitch (exaggerating is a post requisite to any match and a luxury that can be afforded when you are victorious.
Thank you to Walshy (and Rootie) for the BBQ and cooking and to Rhyno from the Swans for organising the meat - it was delish. Also, thanks to Peregrines for allowing us to have the BBQ despite the fact that there is a caterer on site. We hope we made up for it by buying the beer!
Thanks to Big Dee for umpiring, despite the fact that he was gunning for a game and to the Saints for once again proving worthy opponents and true gentlemen.
The club and league would like to extend our sympathies to Ray 'Vossy' Colleran who's uncle passed away during the weekend and was laid to rest on Saturday
